Wage theft – a broad term referring to various ways by which employers fail to pay employees full compensation –  is a serious problem in the construction industry. A growing number of state and local governments have adopted laws to address the problem, giving workers new avenues to recover underpaid wages, expanding recordkeeping and notice requirements on employers, increasing penalties for violations, and often holding contractors liable for subcontractors’ violations.

51·çÁ÷ also held a webinar on wage theft on Aug. 8. Presenters and of the law firm Lerch Early Brewer – who also authored the Wage Theft Guide – explained what wage theft is why it’s a problem for construction contractors, trends in wage theft legislation around the U.S., and best practices for contractors to avoid liability for wage theft.
