Construction Employment Declines in 27 States Between June 2010 & 2011

Construction employment聽declined in聽27 states聽 between June 2010 and 2011聽and dropped in 22 states and D.C. between May and June,聽according聽to聽an analysis by the聽Associated General Contractors of America of state employment data released聽by the聽Labor Department.聽 The construction industry continues to suffer from a difficult combination of weak private sector demand and declining public sector investments in construction.聽鈥淭here is no getting around the fact this industry is stuck in a multi-year slump,鈥 said Ken Simonson, the association鈥檚 chief economist. Association officials聽called on聽Congress to enact new,聽or extend existing, federal聽aviation legislation to ensure聽$2.5 billion worth of聽airport construction projects aren鈥檛 brought to a halt this weekend. 聽鈥淭he last thing this industry needs is a聽halt to an entire category of construction activity,鈥 said Stephen Sandherr, the association鈥檚 chief executive officer.
